WHY?

When children need help because of a disability or an involvement in drugs or alcohol, and the family
is in crisis, parents often don't know what their options are. Not knowing where to get the proper
help can be overwhelming.  Whether you have a child who is struggling with a disability in the public
school system or a child who is getting involved in drugs and/or alcohol, getting all the information
you need to make the best choices for your child and family is very important.

Knowing where to find information on what your parental rights are, what your child's legal rights
are, and what resources are available can be a slow process.   In the meantime, our children suffer
and in some cases spiral out of control.  This is the situation my husband and I found ourselves in
when our son was 13 years old.  Our son has ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and
ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder).  He also has a history of substance abuse.   We spent
thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars in getting our child the help he needed to be
successful.   Our son has been in a non-public school, private school (funded by the school district)
and home schooled (also provided by school district). We have experience with  child advocate
attorneys and the County Mental Health Department.   We  have a lot of experience with drug and
alcohol treatment programs. Most importantly we have learned how to become strong advocates for
our son and get the services he was entitled to.  Had we known then what we know now, our son
would have received the help he needed much faster and our financial situation would have been
much better.

It is our goal to share over 7 years of experience and knowledge so other families will know how to
get the help their child needs quickly.  No child should suffer and be denied benefits that they are
entitled to.  This information will also help you learn how to become an effective advocate for your
child. There are endless resources available to you with some at little or no cost .   Knowing what is
appropriate for your family and making the correct choices based on education and  information
available to you is half the battle. The downloaded material in this booklet will provide you with an
incredible amount of knowledge so you will know how to ask for what your child needs, and what
they are entitled to.   It will also teach you where to find the resources needed to make critical
decisions for your child and family.
