The following are terms you should become familiar with.  They will help you become a
more effective advocate for your child.

Section 504 - Section 504 is a civil rights act that is part
of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

IEP - Individualized Education Program

ED - Emotionally Disturbed

ODD - Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Special Education (IDEA) - Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act

RTC - Residential Treatment Center

Inpatient Rehab - Drug/alcohol rehabilitation program
where child stays at facility full time

Outpatient Rehab - Drug/alcohol rehabilitation program
that allows the child to go home at the end of each day

Wrap Around Services - Service provided by Mental
Health Department that provides a facilitator who works
directly with your family to provide stabilization during a
crisis
AA - Alcoholics Anonymous

Al-Anon - Support group for families and friends
of individuals with alcohol and/or drug dependency

Alateen - Support group for teenagers with
friends or family members with alcohol and/or
drug dependency

NA - Narcotics Anonymous

NAMI - National Alliance on Mental Illness

NCLB - No Child Left Behind

FAPE - Free Appropriate Public Education
